Return of the big waves.

This is a stream the flows into the ocean at Secret Beach. Secret beach is a huge beautiful beach that is totally inaccessible in the winter because of the rough surf. I imagine during the calmer summer months this is a popular swimming beach. Now it is only appropriate for meditative walks and nude sunbathing (illegal I hear...).

Max looking out from Pila'a beach as the large waves begin to roll in. This was the begining of a week long period of huge waves hitting the island. I love this picture and I was damn lucky to get it. Taking pictures of Max is as difficult as getting a picture of bigfoot. He is quick to turn away if he sees the camera first. When I took this picture, he was in this pose for about 2 seconds.

The air is fogged by the sea mist created by the massive waves. The Hawaiian word is "Ehu Kai" which means the mist that sprays off the top of a wave as it breaks.  

Went to Kilauea Lighthouse today to see the big waves smash into the island. That spray is easily over a 100' high. Up on this cliff are nesting boobies and shearwaters.
