Surf competition at the Pines of Hanalei Bay

On Saturday, there was the 4th Annual Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic. A surf competition sponsored by World champion surfers Andy Irons and his brother Bruce for children surfers of Kauai.

These kids are just going out to warm up before the competion. It was amazing to see these young kids, the size of their surf boards, dive into waters flagged by the lifeguards as too dangerous to swim. Ahh..youth and its immortality, Posted by Hello

As if surfing is not enough for these kids. Here they are attempting to play frisbee while surfing...notice the white frisbee just left of the kid who failed to catch it as he crashed on his surfboard. Posted by Hello

In the youngest age set, they had a category where adults would assist the children by pushing their boards as a wave passed. It was a communal effort by all the adults to get the child on a wave as fast as possible. The contest is under a time limit so it is paramount that the kids get out on the waves as fast as possible. This little girl was so impressive...she had the confidence and showwomanship to get everyone on the beach to cheer for her. Posted by Hello

Please notice how large the wave that is swelling in the background....these kids are fearless. Posted by Hello

Even though adults were assisting these young surfers, the waves were large and intiminating...at least to me they were.  Posted by Hello
